&lt;p&gt;Personally, I think options 2 and 3 kind of run together.  After reading the linked articles, I think atheists ought to stop trying to think like theists.  They&#039;re not even in the right ballpark as to what motivates us.  It isn&#039;t all about instant gratification.  God has given us this life and we protect it as a valued gift.  We want to make the most of it for Him.  Killing ourselves, or putting ourselves at risk in hopes of getting killed, throws that gift away as if it were worthless.  There is great reward, both here and in heaven, for submitting to His will.  Both are lessened if we take action to shorten our lives so we can join Him in paradise.&lt;/p&gt;
